  • Rivet

rivet is a metallic pin with ahead, used for uniting two plates or pieces of material together, by passing it through them and then beating or pressing down the point so that it shall spread out and for masecond head; apin orbolt headed or clinched at both ends.

Before being installed a rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The end opposite the head is called the back-tail. On installation the rivet is placed in a punched or drilled hole, and the tail is upset or bucked, so that it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter, holding the rivet in place. To distinguish between the two ends of the rivet, the original head is called the factory head and the deformed end is called the shop head or buck-tail.

Because there is effectively a head on each end of an installed rivet, it can support tension loads, however it is much more capable of supporting shear loads. Bolts and screws are better suited for tension applications.

Fastenings used in traditional wooden boat building, like copper nails and clinch bolts which work on the same principle as the rivet but were in use long before the term rivet came about and they are usually classified among the nails and bolts respectively.

rivet nut  is also known as a blind nutnut-sert or blind rivet nut which is  a one-piece internally threaded and counterbored tubular rivet that can be anchored entirely from one side. There are two types: one is designed to form a bulge on the back side of the panel as a screw is tightened in its threads. The other is similarly drawn in using a screw, but is drawn into the sleeve instead of creating a bulge.

The first rivet nut was created by BF Goodrich in the 1930s and named the rivnut. It was used to mount rubber de-icing boots to aircraft wings.

In the field of aviation, rivnuts are often used to attach various items, such as static wicks and inspection access covers, to the surface of an aircraft.

Rivet nuts are available in body styles of round, splined, hexagonal and square - head styles of flat, flanged, low profile and countersunk in materials such as aluminium, steel, stainless steel and brass.

Set Screw is a type of screw which is most often used to secure an object with in another object. It is usually fully threaded without an external head. They are referred to as "blind head" which meaning the drive is internal li. The Set Screw passes through a threaded hole and is tightened against an inner object to prevent it from moving relative to each other. The most common examples are securing a pulley or gear to a shaft. Set Screws are most often blind that the screw is fully threaded and has no head projecting past the major diameter of the screw thread. A blind set screw as known as the grub screw is always driven with an internal-wrenching drive, such as a hex socket (Allen), star (Torx), square socket (Robertson), or slot. The set screw passes through a threaded hole in the outer object and is tightened against the inner object to prevent it from moving relative to the outer object. It exerts compressional or clamping force through the bottom tip that projects through the hole.

An example application is when a set screw is screwed into a pulley hub so that its end-point bears firmly against the shaft. The fastening action is by friction between the screw and the shaft, often (but not always) with some amount of elastic or plastic deformation of one or both.

Fasteners are hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together. Fasteners can also be used to close a container such as a bag, a box, or an envelope and they may involve keeping together the sides of an opening of flexible material, attaching a lid to a container, etc. Fasteners used in these manners are often temporary, in that they may be fastened and unfastened repeatedly.

Furniture supplied in flat-pack form often uses cam dowels locked by cam locks, also known as conformat fasteners.

Items like a rope, string, wire, cable, chain, or plastic wrap may be used to mechanically join objects; but are not generally categorized as fasteners because they have additional common uses. Likewise, hinges and springs may join objects together, but are ordinarily not considered fasteners because their primary purpose is to allow articulation rather than rigid affixment.

Other alternative methods of joining materials include welding, taping, crimping, soldering, brazing, cementing, or the use of other adhesives.

There are three major steel fasteners using in industries. Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel and Alloys Steel

Stud welding is a form of spot welding where a bolt or nut is welded onto another metal part. The bolts may be automatically fed into the spot welder. Weld nuts generally have a flange with small nubs that melt to form the weld. Studs have a necked down, un-threaded area for the same purpose. Weld studs are used in stud welding systems.

The tip on the weld end of the stud serves a twofold purpose:

  • It acts as a timing device to keep the stud off the base material
  • It disintegrates when the trigger is pulled on the gun.

When the tip disintegrates, it melts and helps solidify the weld to the base material.

Stud welding also known as stud arc welding, joins a stud and another piece of metal together. The stud is usually joined to a flat plate by using the stud as one of the electrodes.

Weld studs are used to secure back plates and various components to enclosure without making the reverse side marking. This type of studs are extremely cost-effective and durable.

Sex bolt also call  a barrel nut, barrel bolt, Chicago screw or post and screw. Sex bolt is a type of fastener which has a barrel-shaped flange and protruding boss that is internally threaded. The boss sits within the components being fastened, and the flange provides the bearing surface.

The sex bolt and accompanying machine screw sit flush on either side of the surfaces being fastened. It is normally chosen because of its low profile compared to other nuts. It often has a built-in feature, like a slot, to aid in tightening the fastener. Some sex bolts are commonly which are architectural bolts, have knurled barrels to allow one-sided assembly. Binding posts are similar to architectural bolts in that they are designed to be assembled from one side, but they have teeth on the flanged surface to keep them fixed. They were originally designed for the printing industry to bind large catalogs together.

Cage nut can be assembled easily into position without the need for special tools and it is consists of a square nut in a spring steel cage which wraps around the nut. The cage has two wings that when compressed allow the cage to be inserted into the square holes in equipment racks, and while released hold the nut in position behind the hole.

Using cage nuts mounted in square holes provides several benefits over threaded holes directly in the cage. First, one has the flexibility to choose the size of nuts and bolts at a time after the cage is installed.  Second, it is easy to  replace. Third, this can allow for a better strength-to-weight ratio, as only the nuts need to be made of a strong material suitable for threading.

The gap between the two wings determines thickness of material that will hold nut in correct position without pulling it from the base material. The size of square hole will also govern the position of nut. If size of hole is too large it will still pull out from base material. There are two types of cage nuts:

A) SLIDE-ON:

These nuts are used when rails are square punched because in such a case it becomes easy to move mounting hardware.

B) SNAP-IN:

These nuts are used for rails that are punched with square mountings in data cabinets.

The most common use for cage nuts is to mount equipment in square-holed 19-inch racks . There are four common sizes: 10-32 and to a lesser extent 12-24 are generally used in the United States; elsewhere M6 (6 mm outside diameter) for light and medium equipment and M8 for heavier equipment such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs).

Screws are used to hold two objects together or to fasten one object to the other. Some screws are designed to screw into a pre-threaded material (internal thread) such as a nut or a theaded hole while others screw directly into a surface while creating their own hole. Common screw head types include: round, flat, pan, oval, truss, and hex. Drive types include, phillips, slotted, torx, hex and socket. The most popular screws are: wood screws, stainless steel screws and machine screws.

Bolts can come fully or partially threaded depending on the bolt type. Common bolt head types include: hex, flange, button and flat heads. Various bolt drives include: socket, hex and square drives. The most popular bolts are:stainless steel bolts, grade 8 bolts, carriage bolts and hex bolts.

A bolt is an externally threaded fastener designed to  insert through holes in assembled parts, and is normally intended to be tightened or released by torquing a nut. A screw is an externally threaded fastener capable of being inserted into holes in assembled parts, of mating with a preformed internal thread or forming its own thread, and of being tightened or released by torquing the head. An externally threaded fastener which is prevented from being turned during assembly and which can be tightened or released only by torquing a nut is a bolt, for example round head bolts, track bolts, plow bolts. An externally threaded fastener that has thread form which prohibits assembly with a nut having a straight thread of multiple pitch length is a screw, for example wood screws, tapping screws.

A carriage bolt as known as a coach bolt, it has a domed or countersunk head, and the shank is topped by a short square section under the head. The square section grips into the part being fixed (typically wood), preventing the bolt from turning when the nut is tightened. A rib neck carriage bolt has several longitudinal ribs instead of the square section, to grip into a metal part being fixed.

Rod with spiral threads and a head on one end - Head includes a neck to prevent rotation. Allows nut to be attached to one end without the bolt tending to rotate. Usually manufactured from metal with various types of necks and different sizes.

Carriage bolts are used to fasten wood to wood, wood to metal and metal to metal. They are a member of the round head bolt family and commonly have a "circular head with a low rounded top surface and flat bearing surface, and an integrally formed square neck under the head.
