A rivet is a metallic pin with ahead,used for uniting two plates or pieces of material together,by passing it through them and then beating or pressing down the point so that it shall spread out and for masecond head; apin orbolt headed or clinched at both ends.

 Before being installed a rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The end opposite the head is called the back-tail. On installation the rivet is placed in a punched or drilled hole, and the tail is upset or bucked, so that it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter, holding the rivet in place. To distinguish between the two ends of the rivet, the original head is called the factory head and the deformed end is called the shop head or buck-tail.

Because there is effectively a head on each end of an installed rivet, it can support tension loads, however it is much more capable of supporting shear loads. Bolts and screws are better suited for tension applications.

Fastenings used in traditional wooden boat building, like copper nails and clinch bolts which work on the same principle as the rivet but were in use long before the term rivet came about and they are usually classified among the nails and bolts respectively.

Blind Rivet Nuts are internally threaded rivets that can be installed into sheet-metal, tubing, extrusions, and plastics. Blind Rivet Nuts provide a reliable system of inserting high quality load bearing threads, available in three different styles.

A rivet nut, also known as a blind nut or nut-sert, is a one-piece internally threaded and counterbored tubular rivet that can be anchored entirely from one side. There are two types: one is designed to form a bulge on the back side of the panel as a screw is tightened in its threads. The other is similarly drawn in using a screw, but is drawn into the sleeve instead of creating a bulge. Rivet Nuts installed from one side only, provide a deep re-usable thread, even in thin materials.

For bike, most screw hole of blike rim are used " blind rivet nut" , casue of the frame and rim made of  sheet-metal, so install with blind rivet nut that can make the application surface flat and smooth. The surface finish will not be damaged after installtion. 

A spoke nipple holds a bicycle wheel's rim to each spoke and it is a headed cylinder with threading on the inside through part of its length. When the other end of the nipple points inwards towards the hub, the nipples will fit in holes in the rim, so that the head of the nipple is on th outermost part of the rim . 

Since spoke threading and nipple threading must match, boxes of spokes usually include a like number of nipples. Weight savings or the need for great strength due to building a wheel with few spokes might call for obtaining different nipples than those shipped with the spokes. Standard materials for nipples are brass and aluminum. 

Brass is heavier but more durable and less prone to corrosion, rounding of flats when tightening, and breaking; aluminum is lighter. If using aluminum nipples, the spokes should be long enough to engage the full length of spoke nipple threads so that the load is carried from spoke to the top of the nipple. If the spoke is only part way into the nipple, the nipple carries the tension load and is prone to breaking from fatigue failure. Also, with aluminum nipples care and a good spoke wrench are needed to avoid rounding the flats while tightening. 

If the underside of the nipple has the traditional conical shape, the nipple tends to adjust perpendicular to the nipple seat of the rim when the spoke is tensioned. This can cause a marked bend in the spoke where it exits the nipple, especially on small wheels with large diameter hubs, and subsequent early spoke failures. Nipples with a spherical contact surface to the rim that do not exhibit this tendency have been introduced. Blind rivets  as know as pop rivets, are tubular and supplied with a mandrel through the center. The blind rivet body is inserted in a hole in the materials to be joined. The tool is actuated and the jaws of the power operated or manual riveting tool grips the mandrel of the rivet. The blind rivet is set by pulling the mandrel head into the rivet body, expanding it, and forming a strong, tight, reliable joint. At a predetermined setting force, the mandrel breaks and falls away.

A thread insert also known as a threaded bushing which is a fastener element that is inserted into an object to add a threaded hole. They may be used to repair a stripped threaded hole, provide a durable threaded hole in a soft material and place a thread on a material too thin to accept it, mold or cast threads into a workpiece thereby eliminating a machining operation, or simplify changeover from unified to metric threads or vice versa.

Self Tapping Inserts (also known as self threaded inserts or Ensats) are cylindrical metal bushings with internal and external threads and are specially designed to cut their own threads as they are being driven into a drilled hole. They provide permanent wear-resistant threads in a wide range of materials, from tough to tap, high strength steels to brittle plastics.

The thread cutting action is performed by the cutting slots on the insert. By tapping its own thread, the self tapping insert eliminates the need for pre-tapped holes.

PEM nut is a threaded fastener or stand-off that is attached to sheet of metal. They are attached by being pressed with great force so that the end of the nut is expanded in order to stay locked and clinched into the sheet metal

A PEM nut also known  as Self-clinching whcih is an internally threaded fastener, when pressed into ductile metal, displaces the host material around the mounting hole, causing it to cold flow into a specially designed annular recess in the shank of the fastener. A serrated clinching ring prevents the fastener from rotating in the host material once it have been properly inserted. Thus a PEM nut becomes a permanent part of the host material offering strong, load bearing threads in relatively thin sheets of metal.  The generic term for this type of fastener is "self-clinching nut".

Blind rivets  referred to as pop rivets, are tubular and supplied with a mandrel through the center. The rivet assembly is inserted into a hole drilled through the parts to be joined and a specially designed tool is used to draw the mandrel into the rivet. This expands the blind end of the rivet and then the mandrel snaps off. These types of blind rivets have non-locking mandrels and are sometimes avoided for critical structural joints because the mandrels may fall out, due to vibration or other reasons, leaving a hollow rivet that will have a significantly lower load carrying capability than solid rivets. Furthermore, because of the mandrel they are more prone to failure from corrosion and vibration. Unlike solid rivets, blind rivets can be inserted and fully installed in a joint from only one side of a part or structure, "blind" to the opposite side.

Blind Rivets are available in flat head, countersunk head, and modified flush head with standard diameters of 1/8, 5/32 and 3/16 inch. Blind rivets are made from soft aluminum alloy, steel (including stainless steel), copper, and Monel.
